Convert PNG to JPG online

People convert PNG to JPG for two reasons: the file is too big, or a form only accepts JPG. This tool does the conversion in your browser using the HTML5 canvas, so your image is never uploaded and there is no account.

Upfront: converting between formats is a Pro feature ($9 one-time, no subscription). If you are on the free plan, skip down to “Shrinking a PNG without converting it”.

How to convert a PNG to JPG

  1. Drop your PNG onto the compressor, or choose it from your device.
  2. Set the Format select to JPG.
  3. Leave quality at the default 75% to start. Higher means a bigger file with finer detail.
  4. Optionally fill in “Max width/height (px)” to scale the longest side down. Images are never enlarged.
  5. Press Compress, compare the before and after size shown for each image, then download.

What happens to transparency

JPG has no transparency, so any transparent area in your PNG is filled with white. That is fine for a photo or a screenshot, but a logo with a see-through background will come out with a white box around it. If you need to place the image on a coloured background, keep it as PNG.

When converting is worth it

JPG is lossy: it discards some detail to save space, and re-saving a JPG repeatedly discards more. Always convert from your original PNG, not from a copy that has already been compressed.

Shrinking a PNG without converting it

PNG is lossless, so the quality slider does nothing for it. What makes a PNG smaller is fewer pixels. Enter a number in “Max width/height (px)” and the longest side is scaled down with the proportions kept. On the free plan you can process up to 5 images per batch, and output is capped at 2000 px on the longest side, which is also what a blank box gives you. For a big screenshot, that alone is often enough.
